The North Penn School District (NPSD) will be participating in 23rd Annual Operation Safe Stop on Wednesday, October 23 in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and six local police departments.
Operation Safe Stop will occur during School Bus Safety Week (10/21-25) and NPSD will be one of many participants across the state of Pennsylvania. On this day, bus drivers will be asked to document any illegal passes occurring on their routes during the day, including identifying information regarding the vehicle, and file it with local authorities. After Operation Safe Stop, NPSD and police departments will share their results with PennDOT. Partnering with NPSD in this effort to increase bus safety for our students are the Towamencin, Upper Gwynedd, North Wales, Montgomery Township, Lansdale, and Hatfield police departments.
Over the past 22 years, PennDOT, along with law enforcement agencies and pupil transportation associations, has conducted Operation Safe Stop. It is a proactive approach to educate the motoring public that passing a stopped school bus, when children are loading or unloading, is both dangerous and illegal. Law enforcement agencies, school transportation providers, pupil transportation associations and PennDOT have combined efforts to raise public awareness about the potential consequences, and reduce the occurrence of illegal school bus passes.
